A man stabbed his own mother in the chest while attempting to stab someone else outside a pub in Liverpool, a murder trial heard.
Jamie Dempsey stabbed his mother, Karen, while she was attempting to separate him from a fight with another man outside Kirkby’s The Brambles public house.
Dempsey went right through his mother’s heart and out the other side, ending up 1.5cm into her liver.
Medics at Aintree Hospital fought to save her life, but she died just over an hour later.
The 32-year-old from Kirkby’s Brechin Road is on trial at Liverpool Crown Court, accused of murdering his mother, Karen Dempsey, on August 22, 2022.
According to Peter Glenister, KC, the defendant claims he did not act unlawfully, claiming he accidentally stabbed his 55-year-old mother while acting in lawful self-defence.
He stated that he and Karen had agreed to meet for a drink at The Brambles at approximately 7 p.m.
According to Mr Glenister, a man named Brian Flynn was upset with Dempsey because he owed him £2,000 for drugs, and Dempsey knew they might meet by chance in The Brambles and armed himself with a large knife.
Mr Flynn was escorted out of the pub onto Cherryfield Drive after throwing a glass at Dempsey twice.
They ran into each other on the road a short time later and began to fight.
During this, he stabbed Mr Flynn at least twice, causing serious injuries, and she was fatally stabbed while Karen Dempsey and another man were intervening.
She returned to the pub but collapsed, and her mother died less than two hours later.
Dempsey walked away before changing his clothes and telling his aunt that he had stabbed his mother.
He called the cops and told them he was wanted for stabbing a man with a piece of glass in self-defense.
He was arrested, and it wasn’t until he was in jail that he learned Karen had died.
The trial of Dempsey, who denies the charges, continues.
