A British tourist who was filming a teenage girl in a Majorcan hotel stripping down to a bikini when he exposed himself in front of her has been arrested.
The 50-year-old was detained by police in Peguera, a popular tourist destination, when the mother of the 17-year-old girl spoke to another hotel guest who claimed to have witnessed the same behaviour by the man against another girl.
The hotel staff called the police, who when they showed up detained him.
According to local reports on Thursday night, the unidentified British citizen was fined 960 euros (£820) after pleading guilty to exhibitionism in a brief trial at a court in Palma, the island’s capital.
The hotel in Peguera, located in the same municipality of Calvia as the party destination of Magaluf, has not been given a name.
This morning, the Civil Guard verified the arrest, but a spokesman declined to comment on the court proceeding.
A British man was detained on suspicion of exposing himself to a minor at a hotel in Peguera, according to a police spokesperson.
‘Police were told he had been filming himself in front of a girl at the hotel with his genitals out of his swimming trunks,’ a reliable source said.
Nobody from the Palma court could be reached for comment immediately.
The incident involving the teenager, whose nationality is unknown, occurred two days prior to Wednesday’s arrest, according to police.
The girl told police that as she was changing into a bikini beside the pool, an older male could be seen standing nearby staring at her and caressing his genitalia while holding a phone.
The reason for the 48-hour delay between the event and the arrest was not immediately clear, but according to a local story, the girl’s mother alerted the police after speaking to a different hotel visitor who claimed to have witnessed the British man repeating his inappropriate behaviour.
The unidentified UK tourist is reported to have returned home yesterday following his court hearing.
It happens only a few days after a British tourist was detained in the party town of Magaluf, which is only a short drive from Peguera, after a vacationer accused him of raping her.
After encountering her alleged sexual assailant during a wild night out in the Majorcan resort town and passing out in his hotel room, the woman called the police.
Local paper Ultima Hora stated that she woke up hours later to find the man ‘on top of her’.
Detectives went to the hotel where the duo ended up using a description the woman had provided them of the rape suspect, and they found the unknown detainee there.
Prior to his court appearance, he was detained by the police. The judge granted his freedom while the investigation is ongoing.
After admitting to the judge that he had intercourse with his female accuser, the prosecution did not ask for his continued detention. Instead, he claimed that the encounter was consensual.
According to reports, the arrest happened on Sunday, and the court hearing took place on Monday behind closed doors.
The name of the hotel in question is unknown.
Magaluf has a long history of being a popular party destination for visitors from all over Europe, especially Brits.
But as authorities in Magaluf and all across Majorca grew increasingly frustrated with the behaviour of British tourists visiting the island, its reputation began to decline.
Physical violence and drunken, loutish behaviour are commonplace, and the party resort has also seen a host of sexual assault claims come to light in recent years.
