22-year-old man arrested for attacking police officials in Barberton

At around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2023, members of the SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) on duty in Barberton arrested a 22-year-old male for attacking police officers.

During the course of their usual patrols, the police saw two males carrying a bag.

The police stopped the two individuals to examine the contents of their luggage, but they refused to cooperate and fled.

The members pursued them, and one of the guys grabbed a revolver and opened fire on the police officers.

The cops fired back and shot the suspect in response.

Luckily, no members of the SAPS were injured. Due to the suspect’s inability to provide a valid firearm licence, he was detained for attempted murder and unlawful possession of a handgun.

The police sent an ambulance to transport him to the hospital, where he is being treated under police protection.

Additional research will be done to see whether the weapon has been used in other crimes in the past.

The male suspect should shortly appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has severely denounced the assault on police employees, whether on or off duty.

“We are mandated by the supreme law of the country, the Constitution of the Republic to serve and protect all inhabitants of the country. We are therefore not supposed to be regarded as enemies or targets by our own community members that we have to serve,” warned the General.
