The Gauteng Department of Education is diligently working to enroll 1 394 kids in grades 1 and 8 who were unable to start school with their friends on 11 January.

Matome Chiloane, MEC for Education in Gauteng, stated that the government has already placed at least 290 751 students.

1 394 students are still not enrolled in schools.

Chiloane asked parents, especially those in “pressure areas,” to exercise patience as the agency processes the applications.

The bulk of unemployed learners reside in the vicinity of Olifantsfontein and Kempton Park.

Parents of unplaced children are told that their children will soon join their classmates in class.

“We recognize that patience has limits, so please work with us and be patient with us. It’s a really sensitive procedure, but know that we’re aggressive about getting these students into schools,” Chiloane explained.

The department has partnered with a church in Olifant that has donated space in order to assist the remaining 236 applicants for grade 1.

To ensure that all students are accommodated, three more mobile units will be provided.

“In Grade 8, the Kempton Park region still has 501 unplaced students. We are continuing to engage with our schools…to guarantee that we close things down,” stated Chiloane.

Tshwane West, with 223 unplaced Grade 8 pupils, and Johannesburg West, with 434 unplaced Grade 8 children, are also high-pressure areas.
