12-year-old confesses murdering mom after lying about it

Authorities claimed a 12-year-old kid confessed to shooting and murdering his mother after first lying to officers about what transpired.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama said on Monday that officers had begun investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman in Forestdale, Alabama. Ayobiyi Cook has been recognized as the lady.

Detectives found after the investigation that Cook’s 12-year-old son, who has not been identified, inadvertently fired a pistol, hitting and killing his mother. “The youngster first invented a scenario that investigators found was not conceivable,” according to a press statement from the sheriff’s office. “The youngster ultimately told the truth about what occurred.” According to investigators, the gunshot was inadvertent.

The boy’s family, with whom he will stay, has been cooperative, according to the department. The matter will be handled via the family court system.

On August 6, 2022, Ayobiyi Abeni’ Harris Cook, also known as “Yo or YoYo,” gained her celestial wings.

Djuan Cook posted this on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.
The police said in an original press release about the event that there seemed to be no forced entry into the residence when they got on the site, but a guy was spotted departing the property just before the 911 call was placed.

CBS News has contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and is waiting for a comment.

Djuan Cook, Cook’s spouse, said that she was known as “Yo” or “YoYo.” He announced on Facebook that the funeral will be place on August 12. “Orange was Yo’s favorite color, so feel free to wear it as we remember her,” he added.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a charity that fights for gun reform and against gun violence, there have been at least 169 accidental shootings by children in 2022. This year, children were responsible for 74 fatalities and 104 injuries in the United States.

In the United States last year, there were 392 accidental shootings by children, resulting in 163 fatalities and 248 injuries.

According to Everytown, around 3 million children and teenagers are exposed to gun violence each year, with 18,000 being shot and killed or injured.

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital research, although parents believe concealing weapons would keep children away from them, 75% of children who live in a household with a gun know where it is kept.

Children as young as three years old may be able to fire a pistol, and studies show that even if a kid has been taught not to handle a gun, they will, according to Nationwide Children’s.

Children may be unable to distinguish between a toy gun and a real gun, and even non-powered weapons such as BB guns, which some people consider toys, may inflict catastrophic harm.
