Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Vladimir Putin’s regime will eventually be toppled by his own people. Zelensky made this prediction in a documentary produced to commemorate one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president predicted that the fragility of Putin’s regime would be felt in Russia, and the people would take action against it. While there is no timeline for this, Zelensky believes that it will happen.
Putin, who expected a swift victory, has seen heavy casualties and defeat on the battlefield. Russia has become increasingly isolated due to stringent sanctions, and there is a wedge emerging between Putin and the country’s elite.
In his speech, Putin accused the West of starting the war in Ukraine and claimed that the responsibility for fueling the conflict, its escalation, and the number of victims lies completely with Western elites.
Reports from Russia suggest that state employees and students have been ordered to attend a nationalistic concert, and signs have popped up around the city proclaiming that “Russia’s border does not end anywhere” and telling people to “watch and listen.” Putin’s armoured motorcade was also spotted heading to the Kremlin at around 1am local time, with traffic stopped in central Moscow to make way.
Zelensky also gave a speech to mark the one-year anniversary of the war, in which he urged Moscow to change course and stop bombing and destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure. He repeated that there would be no negotiations with Russia until their troops withdraw from Ukraine.
China called for a ceasefire earlier this week, but Ukraine previously rejected a pause in the fighting for fear it would allow Russia to regroup militarily after battlefield setbacks. Ukraine expects to receive large supplies of Western weaponry in the coming months to help it mount a planned counteroffensive.
