A heartbreaking incident occurred when a young mother and her two children died in a horrific car crash on the Hume Highway at Menangle Park, southwest Sydney.
Katrina Sila, 34, and her two-year-old son Kai Prahastono died instantly after their silver SUV collided with a cement truck on the other side of the highway.
The three-month-old infant, Ivy, was pulled out of the wreckage in critical condition and taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where she died early on Wednesday morning.
The children’s father, Ian (Ilham) Prahastono, spent the last two days at his baby girl’s life by her hospital bedside.
In the wake of this tragedy, Diana Effendi, a close family friend and ‘sister’ to Katrina, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to cover the funeral costs for all three family members.
In her post, Effendi called on members of the community to come forward and donate funds to support Mr. Prahastono and his family during this difficult time.
She highlighted that the family resided in the south-west of Sydney, loved the area, and called the community their forever home.
According to reports, Mr. Prahastono was at work when the accident happened and was alerted to the crash by his Apple Watch on Monday morning.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident and have requested that anyone with dashcam footage or additional information come forward.
The truck driver was not injured and has undergone mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Mark Gibbs, the Ambulance NSW Superintendent, said that paramedics were faced with challenging and confronting scenes, and it was hard to believe that anyone could survive that wreckage.
Gibbs also believed that the baby capsule Ivy had been strapped in had initially saved her life, demonstrating how child restraints work in such tragic circumstances.
A family statement announced the sad passing of Katrina Sila and son Kai, expressing their heartbreak and asking for Mr. Prahastono to remain in everyone’s thoughts as he navigates this enormous personal tragedy.
This incident comes just days after another horrific accident that claimed the lives of a father and his two children in northern NSW.
