WWE on Showmax Pro smacks SA wrestling lovers

Johannesburg – SuperSport is transferring its WWE broadcast to its streaming service, Showmax Pro, in a confusing turn of events.

SuperSport offers a specialized wrestling channel that was launched in 2017 for WWE. WWE was originally accessible on free-to-air e.tv in South Africa. The transition to the paid broadcaster would have been a setback for local fans, and now that SuperSport is being replaced by Showmax Pro, even fewer people will have access.

However, SuperSport will continue to broadcast Raw, SmackDown, and NXT in addition to the premier WWE live events.

Although unexpected, the action is not unprecedented. The WWE network has already migrated to NBCUniversal’s Peacock video streaming service in the United States. In addition to Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, similar techniques have been applied in Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. WWE senior vice president of international Matt Drew said in a statement, “Showmax Pro is the market leader and an ideal home for WWE content. We believe that by offering our premium live events, including WrestleMania, this relationship will broaden our audience and provide even more for WWE fans in the region.”

Barry Dubovsky, chief operating officer of MultiChoice Connected Video, stated, “Adding WWE to the Showmax platform is a wonderful move that we believe our African entertainment and sports-loving subscribers will love, making WWE even more accessible and inexpensive.”
