Work starts on two new locations on multi-million-pound flood scheme

The Environment Agency and contractors VolkerStevin have finished a portion of the multi-million pound Kendal flood system and are set to begin work on two other areas.

A section of earth embankment and flood walls that will improve protection for residents in this area of Kendal have now been built at Busher Walk, Benson and Sandes.

The riverside footpath has been reopened following the construction of new flood defences, and only minor work is still needed and will soon be finished.

Earthworks to shape the landscape features and the building of pathways have also been finished in the Beezon Field Nature Area.

In order to get the area ready for public reopening in 2023, it will be planted over the winter.

Sand Aire House and Stramongate Bridge to Gooseholme Park are two areas being prepared by VolkerStevin and the Environment Agency for the development of the town’s essential flood defences.

Construction will start on a flood wall that will protect homes and businesses along Lambrigg Terrace, Melrose Place, and Sand Aire House from flooding from The Bridge Inn to the new Gooseholme Footbridge.

A new flood wall that will extend from Stramongate Bridge to Gooseholme Park will also begin construction.

To maintain views of the river, the flood wall’s top will be made of glass panels.

In order to better safeguard nearby homes and businesses against the terrible impacts of flooding, additional construction work will start in Kendal over the coming weeks, according to project manager Keith Roddy with the Environment Agency.

We recognize that the work being done will have an impact on the community, but we will make every effort to limit this.

The neighbourhood will continue to get updates while the construction takes place.

The community is invited to stop by the Kendal flood Information Hub on Little Aynam between 10 am and 4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays to learn more about the flood plan and ask any questions.
