A woman and a child have died after a submerged vehicle was discovered near an RAF base.

Saturday evening, the blue Ford Focus was recovered from a pond near RAF Wittering, Cambridgeshire, where the pair was discovered inside.

The woman was pronounced dead at the site, whilst the boy was brought to the hospital for treatment, where he ultimately perished.

The pond is situated on a steep bend, so fast-moving vehicles that lose control when leaving Whittering in the direction of the west may end up in the water.

Local people reported that the road near where the two tragically perished remained closed after their vehicle was retrieved.

One person who preferred to remain anonymous stated, ‘Nobody is really sure what happened or if it was a local resident who perished. Unfortunately, this is not the first occasion in the past several years that a car has gone into that pond.

“Police arrived last night, and investigators have been searching the scene since last night. Currently, the route remains closed.”

The two were discovered inside a blue Ford Focus that was recovered from a pond near the Cambridgeshire boundary of RAF Wittering on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred three years after a vehicle went into the same pond without causing any injuries.

Saturday, police, fire personnel, and paramedics responded to the area and pulled the woman and child from the vehicle. It is unknown how long the vehicle had been submerged in water.

In 2019, a silver vehicle similarly plunged into the pond following an accident at the same location, but nobody was harmed in that incident.

A representative for Cambridgeshire Police stated, ‘At approximately 6:20 p.m., police were notified that a blue Ford Focus had been sighted in the water near to Old Oundle Road, behind RAF Wittering.

‘Police, fire services and paramedics arrived the site and the woman and child were evacuated from the vehicle.

The boy was rushed to the hospital for treatment but later died, but the woman passed away at the scene.

The police have asked anyone who saw the vehicle enter the sea or who has relevant dashcam footage to phone 101 or visit www.cambs.police.uk/report and use the reference number 414 of 3 September.
