Welsh couple’s topiary garden creates illusion that trees are watching you

An illusion that the trees are watching you has been created by a Welsh couple in their topiary garden.

Wales’ Anglesey residents Christine and Keith Williamson built an amazing art gallery completely out of plants, twigs, trees, and bushes.

Many well-known figures may be seen throughout the garden, including Pacman and Olaf from Frozen.

Even the enormous visage that greets everyone as they pass by is hovering over it.

For more than 30 years, the husband and wife team have had a little bit of pleasure by trimming and priming their Leylandii and other diverse shrubs and trees.

The retired municipal employees’ amazing sculptures have made them quite the local superstars in their community.

More than 300 people visited the 35-year-old garden in the previous year.

Even though our garden is small, we received more than 300 visitors after opening it up as part of the national garden project. Keith shared, age 69.

Everyone always stops to take a look as they pass by, and if we see someone stopping, we generally invite them around the back to see the other hidden sculptures.

Christine, 65, said, “In the 1980s, we had a wild garden full of Leylandii trees; they just kept spreading everywhere and were quite a blight on the neighborhood.

“In our topiary, we mostly construct faces, and we simply kind of build what we perceive inside the plant.”

We just let the trees grow and then attempt to create designs and personalities from there. We never use wire or bend it in an unnatural manner.

They spend a lot of time to build the characteristics we see occasionally, Keith added, repeating his wife’s remarks.

We have a Welsh Dragon in our garden that took years to fully develop, and we also have a scarecrow that required the separation of tree branches to ensure proper growth.

“From Easter Island heads to a dog, we’ve done it all.” What we see in the bushes is everything!

One of the largest works owned by the couple has a massive face that faces the street opposite their home.

“The large face is without a doubt a favorite of the locals and our neighbors,” remarked Christine.

Because of how remote we are, our neighbors often utilize it to provide delivery drivers with instructions.

“We adore decorating the lawn with lights at Christmas, and we usually wear a big hat over our faces, which certainly gets some attention!”

One of the funniest experiences we had, she said, was when a group of American women came upon our garden while driving through the back roads.

They entered the garden and immediately began shooting photos, remarking that they had never seen anything like it.

Because others have stopped to say hello after passing by and seeing the topiary garden, it has helped us make acquaintances on a worldwide scale as well.

According to Why Farm It, leylandii trees may become up to 100 feet tall and 20 feet wide if left untrimmed.

The leylandii tree grows the quickest and adds more than 35 inches per year.

Unknown is the height at which the couple maintains their trees.
