Weird flex bro? Sundowns boss Rhulani makes a peculiar boast

Rhulani Mokwena, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, asserts that his work is more well regarded in Europe than in South Africa.

Some of Mokwena’s critics have questioned his tax skills and ability. Some of these lead to a disappointing tenure with the Orlando Pirates. The notion holds that he can only create results if he has access to quality players. These are abundant at sunsets.

With a commanding 14-point advantage over second-placed Richards Bay, the Brazilians are poised for a sixth consecutive PSL victory. They are currently on an 11-match winning streak, and three points against the Chiefs this weekend would set a new record.

The manager of SuperSport United, Gavin Hunt, is the latest to note the Brazilians’ enormous spending capacity. Rhulani is unfazed and asserts that some of Europe’s top tacticians respect his work.

Mokwena was quoted by SNL24 as saying, “I am a member of a WhatsApp group that includes CEOs of multinational corporations and coaches at the highest level.”

“I’m learning, I’m asking questions, and as long as I maintain this mindset, the opinions of others will never change how I view myself, the team, and my work.

“I am aware that my record as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns would be overshadowed by my record as head coach of Orlando Pirates.

Indeed, it is the truth, yet it does not concern me. You know what’s ironic? The level of appreciation and respect shown by European coaches.

“I am currently on that page. There is a page with the name MAS Possession.

It is a page managed by technocrats located in Italy, and they have featured on their tales some of the world’s teams and coaches.

“They stated, ‘Teams that play position and possession football globally’ and where were we? Sundowns was present, and since Sundowns was present, I was also present.

Rhulani Mokwena replaced Pitso Mosimane as co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi in 2020, following Mosimane’s move to Al Ahly. He was put in sole charge of the club before their current winning streak, and he has every reason to be pleased with his accomplishments thus far. Masandawana have conceded just two goals in their last eleven matches, and have won every single one. It is difficult to argue against these statistics.

Mokwena’s next objective will be to complete the league double over Chiefs, a feat that Sundowns have oddly never accomplished. If they succeed, it will be a significant step towards the championship.
