Week 4 NFL winners (Eagles!) and losers (Trubisky!)

The London Double Doink is the victor.

After years of very lackluster Jaguars games, the NFL has finally dispatched a contest that may appeal to casual sports viewers.

The Vikings and Saints battled back and forth throughout the whole game in London, scoring a combined 23 points in the fourth quarter.

But the final play of the game was the highlight.

Wil Lutz set up to attempt a 61-yard field goal that, if successful, would force overtime with the Saints behind 28-25.

Lutz executed a clean kickoff, so bestowing onto London the greatest gift that football has to offer: a stunning double doink.

New football fans in London may be thinking, “Wow!” “I wager that has never occurred before!”

Au contraire.

The Chicago Bears’ last-chance play was unsuccessful.

With only three seconds remaining on the clock and a deficit of 20-12 against the Giants, the Chicago Bears were frantic.

With 67 yards between the line of scrimmage and the end zone, the Bears made every effort to advance the ball.

Despite the effort’s valor, it ultimately failed.

The nicest aspect of the clip is ESPN’s game log entry on the play.

“J.Fields short right pass to T.Ebner gains 2 yards to the CHI 35. Lateral to E.St. Brown for 9 yards to the CHI 44. FUMBLES, touched at CHI 44, recovered at CHI 39 by CHI-J.Fields. J.Fields to the CHI 36 for a loss of 3 yards. Lateral to E.St. Brown for 8 yards to the CHI 44. 12 yards from T.Ebner to the New York Giants’ 44 (J.Ward). J.Ward fumbles, and CHI-L.Patrick recovers at NYG 46. L.Patrick to the CHI 48 for a loss of 6 yards. Lateral to J.Fields for 1 yard to the CHI 49. Reverse pass by T.Jenkins to the CHI 46 for -3 yards (T.Crowder). T.Crowder fumbles the ball, which is recovered by T.Ebner at CHI 41. T.Ebner to the CHI 32 for a loss of 9 yards. FUMBLES, touched at CHI 32, recovered at CHI 28 by NYG-D.Belton.”

Game over.

WINNER: Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles fell behind 14-0 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first quarter.

Then, all of a sudden, they awoke, scoring 29 unanswered points to record their fourth consecutive victory to start the season.

Again, quarterback Jalen Hurts was outstanding, bolstering his early-season MVP case.

At 4-0, the Eagles are the only unbeaten football team.

According to Hurts, they are “damn good.”

On Sunday, the Seahawks’ best wide receiver, D.K. Metcalf, was carried off the field in the fourth quarter, prompting injury fears.

What a feat!

LOSER: Baker Mayfield

The Carolina Panthers are completely disoriented.

The Baker Mayfield experiment is failing, their head coach is likely to be dismissed shortly, and the home fans are displeased.

After yet another fruitless possession, the Carolina crowd vented their ire against Mayfield.

Mayfield can claim as much as he wants that he doesn’t care about the boos, but when the fan base is wondering when Sam Darnold will be well enough to play, things are not going well.

Lamar Jackson, being crazy, is the WINNER.

The Baltimore Ravens are awaiting an extension from Lamar Jackson.

This type of escapability only alters the football field’s math.

—NFL (@NFL)

2 October 2022

In the first half, Jackson and the Ravens built a 20-3 lead over the Bills, but were unable to hang on for the victory.

Jackson remains one of the most intriguing football players despite the setback.

Patrick Mahomes, being even more stupid, is the winner.

Patrick Mahomes, unlike Lamar Jackson, already has a deal in place for the foreseeable future, so the Chiefs can smile when he makes ridiculously cool plays like this one, knowing he is doing exactly what they paid him to do.

The fact that Mahomes didn’t throw away this ball is borderline ludicrous and chaotic. However, Mahomes executes similar plays so frequently that they have become practically ordinary.

LOSER: The Detroit Lions defense

The Detroit Lions offense has scored 140 points through four weeks, 11 more than any other NFL team.

The Detroit Lions defense has allowed 141 points through four weeks, 26 more than any other NFL club.

Despite boasting the most potent offensive in the NFL, the Lions are 1-3, including a 48-45 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.

If the Detroit defense can regain its composure, the Lions might cause problems in the NFC. Before then, wager on the over.

WINNER: Kenny Pickett and Steelers supporters

At halftime, with the Steelers behind the Jets 10-6, head coach Mike Tomlin felt it was time for a change and inserted rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Tomlin stated that the team needed a spark, and Pickett delivered it by reviving the Steelers’ offense and scoring two touchdowns against the Jets to keep the game close.

The SportsCenter Twitter account.

Pittsburgh ultimately lost the game, and Tomlin was unsure who would start at quarterback the next week.

Tomlin said after the game, “We accomplished what we needed to do to put ourselves in position to win this game.” “We will perform the action again. I would like to maintain the status quo with what has transpired here today. We will address next week next week.”

While Pickett was not flawless, Trubisky had led the Steelers offense to to four touchdowns through 14 quarters. It was time for the change, and while the Steelers may not be better with Pickett at quarterback, they will be more entertaining.

LOSER: Mitch Trubisky

It is uncertain whether Trubisky will ever start for the NFL again.

After the 2021 season, in which Big Ben’s weak arm prevented the Steelers offense from attempting virtually any ball more than 10 yards downfield, it appeared like any warm person under center would be an improvement, especially given the talent of the Steelers’ wide receiver corps.

Instead, Trubisky once again stumbled. Even if Pickett is not the long-term solution, at least he brings a fresh question to the forefront of Pittsburgh’s strategy.

Bailey Zappe comes out on top

A week ago, Bailey Zappe was the third quarterback on the Patriots depth chart, a member of the practice squad, and a long shot to play in the near future.

After Mac Jones sustained a high ankle sprain last week and Brian Hoyer suffered a concussion just minutes into the Patriots’ game against the Packers on Sunday, Zappe found himself thrust into the fire and tasked with keeping up with two-time reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Zappe performed admirably.

—NFL (@NFL)

2 October 2022

The inability of Zappe and the Patriots to move the ball in the extra period allowed the Packers to win the game with a relatively simple field goal.

Still, for a rookie to maintain his calm and compete with Rodgers at Lambeau Field is a remarkable accomplishment.

Even though the Packers defense was sloppy on a few plays, Aaron Rodgers should not have needed overtime to defeat a rookie quarterback who ranked third on the depth chart of their opponent a week ago at home.

The Packers must immediately get their offense in order. At this point in the season, Green Bay has a respectable record, but they have not yet exhibited the characteristics of a championship contender.

The quarterbacks of the New York Giants had a long day.

First, starter Daniel Jones was forced out of action with an ankle issue. Then, backup Tyrod Taylor left the game with a concussion.

With no more quarterbacks on the roster, the Giants ran a few plays out of the wildcat, with Jones serving as a not-so-convincing distraction lined up at wide receiver.

2 October 2022

With a trip to London set for next week, if the Giants have to bring in new quarterbacks, they will have to learn the system fast.

WINNER: The Kansas City Chiefs offense

Through the first three games of the season, the Buccaneers defense had allowed opponents to score just 27 points combined.

On Sunday night, the Chiefs put up 28 in the first half, en route to a 41-31 win over Tom Brady and his Bucs.

While people worried about how the departure of superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill would affect Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense, it appears things are going just fine.

To the Raiders defense that is set to play Mahomes and company next week, best of luck.

You’re going to need it.
