Kelly Appleton, at the age of 20, was given a warning from doctors and an emergency hospital referral when her weight dropped to just 5st 5lb.

This occurred not long after she opened up to her family about her years of undereating and overexercising due to anorexia. She was consuming only 42 calories a day while doing 12,000 steps in exercise, and her body was deteriorating.

Now, at the age of 24, Kelly has spoken about her experiences with anorexia during Eating Disorders Awareness Week to help others.

Kelly is in a much healthier place both physically and mentally, and her experiences have led her to reflect. She is studying to become an education mental health practitioner for children and young people at university.

She wants others to know they are not alone and that help is available.

Kelly’s relationship with food and her body image was rocky since she was young. Growing up, there was no promotion of body positivity on social media, and everything was about losing weight. Kelly had a difficult time moving away from her hometown to attend university.

As a result, she lost drastic weight due to the need to take control of a life that felt overwhelming. In her third year, anorexia took hold, and she realized the extreme condition she was in as a newly qualified teacher when she started making herself sick and running laps around her classroom at the end of the day to burn more calories.

After her boyfriend, Lewis Wright, urged her to open up to her parents, Mick Appleton and Sharon Leeson, Kelly eventually did. However, by the time she received medical intervention, her body was already starting to shut down.

Kelly went home with her parents to recover since she knew that being confined to a ward during the Covid-19 pandemic would not aid her recovery. She still has difficult days, but she is doing well, and she has found her support systems.

Kelly’s triggers are now known, and she is open about her feelings. She went into teaching because she loves working with children, and after her experience, she decided to work in the area of mental health specifically.

Kelly is now an advocate for UK eating disorder charity Beat and hosted a fundraising coffee morning. She wants to be a voice for other people struggling and to remove the stigma around eating disorders.

There is not enough knowledge about eating disorders out there, and people need to know that they don’t only affect teenage girls.
