WAEC rejects state performance report

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims that it graded states based on their performance on its recently administered tests for school pupils.

Mr. Patrick Areghan, Head of WAEC’s National Office, denied the charges, which he described as misleading, inaccurate, and the work of a troublemaker. In an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos, Areghan maintained that the information did not originate from the council.

Mr. Patrick Areghan, Head of WAEC’s National Office, refuted the allegations, describing them as misleading, false, and the work of a liar.
Areghan told the Story Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday that the council was not the source of the news.

“We heard via social media that WAEC has rated the performance of states on our recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which would likely be administered to school candidates in 2022.”

It ranked Kebbi 20th out of 37 named states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to public school performance data reportedly provided by the council.

The malicious report ranked Enugu first, followed by Edo and Benue with respective scores of 93.9, 93.5, and 91.7 percent.

“I would like to state that the ranking is completely false, as it did not originate from the council, and there are numerous other factors to consider in order to arrive at such a percentage, which is not our responsibility.”

“The WAEC does not rank states.” “We just indicate the number of credits in subjects and other categories,” explained the WAEC administrator. We do not dabble in areas outside the scope of our council responsibilities.
He recommended the public to disregard the ranking on the grounds that it was inaccurate.
