Ukraine war: Soldiers on Snake Island in the Black Sea inspire hope

On February 24, 2022, amidst news of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, a small group of soldiers on Snake Island in the Black Sea inspired hope as they faced down the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

The Moskva trained its guns on the 13 Ukrainian border guards and transmitted a message to surrender or be bombed. In response, one of the guards, Roman Hrybov, famously replied over the radio, “Russian warship, go f**k yourself.”

The phrase became a rallying cry for Ukraine’s resistance and a symbol of hope and defiance, even as rumours circulated that the men had been killed.

A month later, many of the men were returned to Ukraine, and Hrybov was later celebrated as a hero.

The sentence has since become a cultural symbol of resistance and a reminder that hope can be found even in the face of seemingly impossible odds.
