On April 19, 2023, South Africa witnessed the launch of two new political parties, Rise Mzansi and Arise South Africa.

As the 2024 general elections draw near, it is not uncommon for new parties to emerge, and this time is no exception.

In fact, in March of this year, former Action SA’s Gauteng leader, Bongani Baloyi, announced the formation of his new party, Xiluva.

The recent signing into law of the Electoral Amendment Bill by President Cyril Ramaphosa paves the way for independent candidates to contest positions in the National Assembly and provincial legislatures.

However, the amended bill comes with several requirements and measures that need to be met by persons who wish to be nominated as independent candidates.

Notable measures that feature in the bill are the requirement for the inspection of copies of lists of independent candidates and accompanying documents, provision for objections to independent candidates, and the inclusion of a list of independent candidates entitled to contest elections.

The bill also stipulates a revised formula for the allocation of seats and their re-allocation in the event of vacated seats and the obligation for independent candidates to abide by the Electoral Code of Conduct.

The signing of the Electoral Amendment Bill marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s democratic journey, as it allows for greater inclusivity and diversity in the political sphere.

The establishment of new political parties and the provision for independent candidates to contest elections could lead to a more competitive and dynamic political landscape.

As South Africa gears up for the 2024 general elections, the emergence of new political parties and the inclusion of independent candidates could signal a shift towards a more diverse and inclusive democracy.

However, it remains to be seen how these changes will affect the political landscape and the outcome of the upcoming elections.
