Two British Men Arrested in Madrid After Trying to Skip €2,200 Bar Bill

Two British men have been arrested in Madrid after reportedly attempting to leave a bar without paying a bill of €2,200 (£1,930).

The men, aged 49 and 52, had allegedly consumed nearly 90 glasses of champagne, along with other drinks, after shouting “We’re millionaires” and offering to buy drinks for other revellers, including several women.

The bar staff had allowed the men to run up the large bill after they had previously settled a €1,000 (£880) bill.

However, when the men refused to pay the outstanding amount and became aggressive, police were called and they were arrested on suspicion of committing fraud.

The men’s motive for their behaviour is unknown, but local media has speculated that they may have been in Madrid to watch a Champions League match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. However, this has not been confirmed.

The bar in question, Commo, is situated in the Sol neighbourhood of Madrid’s city centre and is described online as a “buzzy bar serving shots, house cocktails and jugs of sangria”.

Its website advertises VIP stag do tickets for €49 (£43) and boasts of having 600 shots on offer, including blended whisky shots for €3 (£2.65).

According to one Tripadvisor review, Commo is a “great place with a good vibe and the staff are great”, while another visitor from the UK recommended the bar and praised one of the waitresses.

The two men have been handed over to the courts and it is not clear whether they have appeared in court or whether the outstanding bill has been settled.

The bar was closed the morning after the incident and no comment was available from the establishment.
