Two accused in double amputee’s death

Los Angeles — – Thursday, officials accused two individuals with shooting and murdering a homeless double amputee as he slept in a wheelchair in South Los Angeles.

On May 17, police accused Rubi Anguiano Salazar, 37, and Raymundo Hernandez, 34, with murder in connection with the death of Gerold Lipeles, 69.

Prosecutors say that Lipeles was asleep outside a McDonald’s when Salazar strolled up and shot him in the head. Five days later, he passed away in a hospital.

District Attorney of Los Angeles County George Gascón stated in a statement that the murder is “shockingly violent and heartless.”

Hernandez and another man were detained on Tuesday, although investigators have not yet charged the second man with a felony awaiting additional investigation.

According to authorities, Salazar was already in detention for an unrelated offense.

Additionally, Salazar is charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a handgun. Four days after Lipeles was murdered, Salazar, according to the prosecution, shot a 67-year-old lady in the rear at a bus stop.

Authorities have not disclosed a potential motive for the shootings.

It was initially unclear if Salazar and Martinez had attorneys who could represent them.
