Turkey’s south is still experiencing aftershocks a month after twin earthquakes destroyed most of the buildings in Nurdagi. Havva Arslan, her husband, and their three children are one of the few families who survived the catastrophe.
After being trapped under the rubble of their five-story apartment building for five days, they finally emerged alive. The Arslan family lives in a small but sturdy container home behind a petrol station, trying to rebuild their life.
Hasan, an accountant, plans to return to work soon since clients have started calling again. Meanwhile, two of their children have returned to school. Their eldest daughter, Fatmagul, is preparing for her university entrance exams while mourning the loss of 36 relatives. Despite their grief, the Arslan family is grateful to be alive and have each other.
During the earthquake, the family fell on one floor as the floor beneath them gave way, with four floors above crashing down around them.
They were trapped in a dark space without food or water and had no idea how much time was passing. They began hallucinating, seeing things like apples and oranges, and hearing things that weren’t there. Finally, a rescue team found them and saved their lives.
The death toll in Turkey from the earthquakes has risen to nearly 46,000, with about 6,000 people killed in neighbouring Syria. Despite the devastation, the Arslan family tries to pick up the pieces of their life and move forward. They are grateful to be alive and have a new home where they feel safe.
