More than 1,500 people have been killed by severe earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

The U.S. Geological Survey stated that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck southeastern Turkey on Monday afternoon, only hours after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake killed more than 1,500 people in the Turkish and Syrian portions of the region. This one was followed by a minimum of twenty aftershocks.

Earlier, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. In addition to the fatalities, thousands of others were injured, and a desperate search was underway for survivors buried beneath the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the death toll from the initial earthquake has surged to 912.

The Syrian Ministry of Health reported that around 370 people were murdered in government-held territory. The White Helmets rescue organization reported at least 221 deaths in rebel-held regions.

It struck during a snowy, rainy night before dawn and was felt as far away as Cairo, Cyprus, Lebanon, and — Greenland.

The earthquakes rattled a region ravaged for more than a decade by the Syrian civil war.

The impacted region in Syria is divided between the government and the opposition. Turkey is home to millions of war refugees.

Numerous nations, notably the United States, Germany, France, Greece, and Ukraine, pledged assistance quickly.
