Tuesday night Extreme Discomfort Advisory for Western Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Extreme Discomfort Advisory for the Western Cape on Monday, 9 January.

EXTREME DISCOMFORT ADVISORY

The weather advisory is valid from 8:00 on Monday until 20:00 on Tuesday, 10 January. The northeastern interior of the province is expected to be affected by the sweltering conditions.

“Very hot temperatures will result in very uncomfortable conditions over the northeastern interior of the Western Cape.

“Temperatures reaching close to 40 degrees Celsius are likely to occur in places,” said the weather service.

As previously reported, the weather service typically advises residents of the affected areas to avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun and keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

The potential impacts of the hot weather include:

  • Hyperthermia. The human ability to cool the body through sweating is reduced when temperatures are extremely high.
  • Heat stroke is the most pressing health and safety concern in an extremely hot environment. The weather service warned that it can be fatal if medical attention is not received immediately.
