Trump special master ruling appealed by Justice Department

The Justice Department filed notice Thursday that it is challenging a Florida federal court’s decision to appoint a special master, an independent third party, to analyze the documents seized from the Mar-a-Lago club of former President Donald Trump.

Trump nominated Judge Aileen Cannon to the bench in 2020. On Monday, she decided that federal agents exploring whether Trump mishandled secret data must halt utilizing the confiscated records in their criminal investigation until the assessment of a special master.

The Justice Department has also requested that Cannon partially suspend her own order so that investigators can continue to study the 103 secret documents recovered at Mar-a-Lago.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals will review the Justice Department’s appeal.
