TikTok has announced significant changes for users under the age of 18, including the introduction of a one-hour daily screen time limit in an effort to reduce excessive scrolling. The new time limit will be automatically applied to all users under the age of 18, who will be asked to enter a passcode to continue scrolling after an hour. For users under 13, the limit will be set to 60 minutes, but a parent or guardian will need to set or enter an existing passcode to enable an additional 30 minutes of watch time. The app will also introduce a weekly recap of screen time for teenage accounts and a screen time dashboard for Family Pairing.

According to Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s Head of Trust and Safety, the company consulted academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital when determining the appropriate length for the time restriction. In addition to the time limit, TikTok will prompt teenagers to set a daily screen time limit if they opt out of the 60-minute default and spend more than 100 minutes on the app in a day.

TikTok’s new modifications come in response to a spate of dangerous online “challenges” circulating on the app, including the “tranquilizer challenge” and “choking challenge,” which have led to overdoses and deaths among young people. TikTok is facing wrongful death lawsuits in the US after two girls fatally hanged themselves following exposure to such content on the app. TikTok has denied responsibility for these incidents, but the app is encouraging users to flag any dangerous behavior
