Thomas H. Lee’s cause of death is currently unknown

Thomas H. Lee, a prominent financier in New York City with a net worth of approximately $2 billion, was found dead in his office bathroom on Thursday in what appears to be a suicide.

Lee, 78, was discovered by his assistant with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and a revolver by his side. The cause of his suicide is currently unknown.

Lee graduated from Harvard in 1965 and worked in securities analysis before transitioning into banking, eventually rising to vice president at First National Bank of Boston.

In 1974, he started his private equity firm, Lee Equity.

He became known for acquiring midsized companies, restoring their worth, and selling them for massive profits, including selling Snapple for $1.7 billion in 1992.

Lee was a renowned businessman, with his leveraged-buyout deals earning his company more than 30-fold gains in some instances.

Despite his reputation as a shrewd and successful financier, he was also known as a genuinely nice person and generous philanthropist, serving on the boards of several prominent organizations.

His second wife and five children survived him.
