The private school that has declared WAR on the infamous mullet haircut

A no-nonsense principal has vowed to send home students who front to school with mullets and other outlandish hairstyles.

Jon Franzin, the principal of the all-boys St Virgil’s College in Hobart’s north, said the strict rule is in place to prepare the young men for ‘life beyond the college gate.’We regularly and clearly communicate to all students, parents and carers the college’s expectations, and will continue to do so,’ he told the Hobart Mercury.

Just as many workplaces have expectations of presentation, the college expects its students to adhere to a dress code that includes neat hair and appropriate uniform.’

Mr Franzin’s hardline stance is believed to have bemused some parents, but the principal insists the policy adheres with the College’s holistic education focus, which will see them ‘thrive’ in the future.

St Virgil’s is an independent boys school with campuses in Austins Ferry and Hobart.

Richmond Tigers AFL star Jack Riewoldt and cricketer Michael Di Venuto are former students at the college. The mullet haircut – short at the sides, long at the back – is back in vogue across Australia.

According to Australia’s Best Mullets Instagram page, it ‘isn’t just a haircut, it is a lifestyle’.

Aussie athletes rocking the retro hairstyle include Olympic sprinter Rohan Browning, AFL star Bailey Smith and Melbourne Storm NRL fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen.
