The next prime minister should reorganise Whitehall to solve Britain’s challenges, says a study

A research has cautioned that the future prime minister must restructure the bloated Whitehall “blob” if they are to successfully address the myriad of issues confronting the UK.

The new Government will only be able to handle the cost of living problem, a potential rise in Covid rates, and the conflict in Ukraine if it is equipped with a more strategic and proactive civil service, according to renowned think tank Policy Exchange.

Concerns about the present government “machine” are highlighted in the organization’s study, Reform of Government – What do we want from our future prime minister?

They include the enormous size of the civil service—around 480,000 people—and the pressing need for additional experts to assist with policy.

It has also been said that contracts should be given based on performance rather than on a fixed-term basis as part of a manifesto for change.

The next premier “must accept the notion of a smaller and more strategic civil service that provides services in a more efficient manner,” according to Benjamin Barnard, the report’s author, in order to re-energize the civil service.

According to the article, this will be accomplished by moving through with plans to shift 22,000 employees outside of London and simplify the staff.

During their campaigns for the Tory leadership, both candidates promised to overhaul the civil service.
