As part of a plan to return the lives of the flood victims to normal and restore their dignity, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has revealed the land parcels that have been secured and linked to each mass care center.

Sihle Zikalala, the premier of KwaZulu-Natal, provided the most recent update on the provincial government’s response to the flood disaster that struck the province in May and unveiled a program to rehouse flood victims who have lost homes and are still housed in mass care centers.

The third stage of the province government’s response, which will concentrate on rehabilitation and reconstruction, is currently underway, according to Zikalala.

The building and repair of significant infrastructure as well as the development of homes in appropriately situated areas with safeguards against future severe weather events are all included in this.

Eight locations have been chosen for temporary housing

Eight sites have been identified for the construction of temporary residential units (TRUs) in the eThekwini Municipality, with three in the North Region and five in the West Region, according to Zikalala.

According to Zikalala, the provincial government is ready to begin delivering 1 074 TRUs, which will include ablution, as part of the first phase. He continued by saying that the service providers had also been chosen and that a significant shift in the exodus of residents from shelters was anticipated.

“Of the 84 mass care centers in the province, 44 have already been connected to a potential piece of land.

The National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is scheduled to release detailed assessments on the 44 recommended properties via Power of Attorney from one department to the next.

All sites are currently undergoing preliminary engineering design processes. Every design adheres to the long-term fix. In order to connect proposed TRUs with the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Department, the City [Durban] must install the necessary services, according to Zikalala.

R2 billion in projects are planned to reintegrate displaced communities and restore normalcy.

The Premier also stated that in order to help the displaced families resume their normal lives, the Department of Human Settlements identified R2 127 542 632.24 in projects.

The department realigned R515 975 906.24 of its own allotted monies. To finish the process of rehousing all the identified communities who are now residing in mass care centers, primarily in the eThekwini Metro, the province will need an additional R1 611 566 726.
