The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals on Netflix—what is it?

The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals on Netflix—what is it?

What would American fans of The Great British Baking Show be doing in 2023, and might it be titled The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals? Today, the sixth season of the reality competition series premieres on Netflix, introducing Americans to yet another British-born offshoot of the renowned Bake Off. The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals eschews the tent, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and a group of endearing amateurs in favor of a beautiful catering kitchen, snooty judges, and professional patisserie chefs.

Currently, there are so many Great British Baking Show imitators on Netflix that you may expect them to receive their own subgenre. What distinguishes The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals from shows like Zumbo’s Just Desserts, Bake Squad, and Sugar Rush? What even is Netflix’s The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals?

Here’s everything you need to know about the newest addition to the Netflix universe of The Great British Baking Show…

The Professionals of The Great British Baking Show

The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals is a straight spin-off of The Great British Baking Show produced in the United Kingdom. The show launched in the United Kingdom in 2016 with the title Bake Off: Crème de la Crème. This was quickly replaced with Bake Off: The Professionals. [Note: The original show is known as The Great British Bake Off outside of the United States and Canada because Pillsbury owns the rights to the phrase “Bake Off” in those regions. Therefore, we are left with the cumbersome Great British Baking Show moniker.]

The Professionals differs significantly from its more modest predecessor. Two-person teams fight for baking glory in The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals, which is filmed in a posh kitchen (apparently in one of England’s most stunning manors, but I’m suspicious).

The competing patisserie chefs must first demonstrate their skills with Miniatures, followed by a Secret Recipe, and finally a Showpiece Challenge. Both challenges are scored with points and require greater technical skill than the masterworks we already receive in the tent.

How Do I Know Tom Allen and Liam Charles, the Netflix Hosts of Season 6 of The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals?

Tom Allen and Bake Off alumnus Liam Charles are the hosts of The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals.

Fans of The Great British Baking Show will recognize Tom Allen as the dapper British presenter who filled in for host Noel Fielding in one of the most recent episodes of The Great British Baking Show: Holidays.

Liam Charles appeared in the fifth season of The Great British Baking Show, also known as the first season without Mary Berry, Sue Perkins, and Mel Giedroyc. Since his stint on The Great British Baking Show, Charles has become a well-known food figure in the United Kingdom. He currently serves as a judge on Junior Baking Show, which is also available on Netflix.

Where are Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith on Netflix’s Season 6 of The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals?

They are finished! They have been dismissed! NEVER AGAIN WILL YOU SEE PAUL AND PRUE!!!

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith have never served as judges on any version of The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals. Since the show’s debut, it has been hosted by Benoit Blin (who does NOT solve Rian Johnson murder mysteries!) and Cherish Linden (whose name is NOT a reference to the catchy Madonna song of the same name)

How good is The Great British Baking Show: The Professionals?

I mean, it’s really different from the original Great British Baking Show, but it’s also incredibly similar. It features a similar soundtrack and numerous references to jaffa cakes and Kitchen-Aid mixers. However, more emphasis is placed on putting pros through their paces and creating works of art than on recognizing outstanding amateurs. You may argue that more recent seasons of The Great British Baking Show are similarly cruel.

If you devour every baking show on television, you will undoubtedly enjoy binge-watching this one.

If you miss the original version of The Great British Baking Show, this is not it. (For these feelings, watch the most recent seasons of The Great Pottery Throwdown on HBO Max.)
