Tesla is moving its engineering headquarters back up to northern California

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla’s engineering headquarters will be moving back to northern California after less than two years in Texas, while the corporate HQ will remain in Texas.

During a press conference with California Governor Gavin Newsom, Musk described the move as a “poetic transition.” The move will put Musk closer to Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco, which he purchased for over $40 billion in the fall.

Musk moved the company to Austin, Texas, in 2021, citing tax breaks, cheaper labor costs, and a dispute with California health officials during COVID-19 as reasons for the move.

However, the company’s factory in Fremont, California, is expected to manufacture about 600,000 vehicles over the next year, which would solidify California’s standing as the largest car manufacturer in the US.

The move of the engineering headquarters back to California could be due to tax incentives and California’s support for electric vehicles. Governor Newsom applauded Tesla’s decision to come back to the Golden State and said bringing Tesla back was critical for the state to become the leader in automotive manufacturing.
