Sydney firetruck and tram crash, injuring five and derailing light rail

Two firemen and three passengers were hurt when a firetruck and a light rail vehicle collided, sending the tram careening off the rails.

On Monday in Sydney, an accident occurred near the Haymarket junction of Pitt Street and Eddy Avenue.

According to Michael Hammond of Fire and Rescue NSW, the collision occurred at 10:50 am as the fire engine was responding to an emergency situation.

The light rail car “came off the rails as a result of the incident,” he said.

Two of the four firemen engaged in the accident suffered minor injuries, while NSW Ambulance also evaluated and treated a number of light rail passengers.

Localized road restrictions are still in effect, and the general public is asked to stay away.

According to a NSW Ambulance spokesman, three other people received just minor injuries while the two passengers were sent to the hospital in stable condition.

A guy in his 40s was brought to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with minor injuries, while a lady in her 70s was transferred to St. Vincent’s Hospital with chest injuries.

We’re grateful that no one was seriously hurt because this happened in a very busy area of the CBD with lots of pedestrians, said NSW Ambulance Inspector Ben Saywell.

A fire vehicle just hit the tram and knocked it off the rails, according to an Instagram photo (seen above). Talk about a difficult workday.
