Survey shows the most popular 2022 films in America

According to one in five Americans, the best film of 2022 was also its highest-grossing film.

19% of 2,000 respondents in a recent OnePoll survey named “Top Gun: Maverick” as one of their favorite films of the year, making it the most popular pick.

However, fans were not the only ones left impressed.

In addition to earning $1.48 billion at the box office this year, “Maverick” has already been nominated for two Golden Globes by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and named Best Film by the National Board of Review.

Originally announced by Paramount Pictures in 2010, the sequel’s release date was pushed back four times before finally settling on May 27, 2022, due to challenges behind the scenes and pandemic-related setbacks.

Tom Cruise himself was sure that the picture will premiere in theaters, declaring in a Cannes Q&A that a streaming-only premiere would “never” occur.

Regarding the remainder of OnePoll’s Best-Of list, just one streaming-only picture made the top ten: “Enola Holmes 2,” starring Millie Bobby Brown as the titular Enola and Henry Cavill as her more famous brother, Sherlock Holmes.

Other films included highly anticipated sequels such as “Jurassic World: Dominion” (17%) and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (15%) from Marvel, as well as critically acclaimed films such as “The Whale” (11%) and new cult classics such as “Bodies Bodies Bodies” (11%).

And while “Top Gun: Maverick” had the most good ratings overall, other films, such as “Where the Crawdads Sing,” received a somewhat greater percentage of positive evaluations relative to the number of respondents who watched.

A few other films received more overwhelmingly positive reviews, such as “Where the Crawdads Sing” (61%) and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (58%).

“Black Panther” was the third most universally acclaimed film.

Nonetheless, “Top Gun: Maverick” stood out as one of the top 10 most-watched films of 2022 and the picture had received the most “thumbs up” votes from respondents.

Cruise recently uploaded a video on social media thanking everyone for supporting “Top Gun: Maverick” and “coming out to the movies” — moments before fist-bumping “Mission: Impossible” director Christopher McQuarrie and free-falling out of a plane.
