SuperSport United leads the Premiership log, while Pirates are back to winning ways

Tuesday evening in Durban, Orlando Pirates stopped a three-match losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Golden Arrows in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Princess Magogo Stadium KwaMashu.

After an impressive first half, Pirates failed not maintain the same level of supremacy in the second half. In the second half, Arrows gained confidence but did not capitalize on their good fortune.

Rightwing Monnapule Saleng, who was assisted in the Pirates’ three-man assault by Kermit Erasmus and Deon Hotto, scored both first-half goals in a span of 18 minutes. Each time, Erasmus provided the scoring feeds.

Olisa Ndah, a central defender for the Pirates, also contributed to both goals by initiating offensive forays with long passes from deep areas. The arrows failed to detect the threat and respond to the apparent upfield kicks.

Saleng’s goal in the sixth minute capped an exciting start for Pirates, who came close to scoring in the second minute when midfielder Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s shot from the edge of the Arrows’ goalmouth hit the crossbar.

The Pirates then bombarded the Arrows’ half with an onslaught of strikes, resulting in 11 shots on goal, of which only five were on target.

SuperSport United has won three consecutive matches after defeating Stellenbosch FC 2-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday.

SuperSport rose to the top of the Premiership rankings, one point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns. Stellenbosch dropped to sixth place on the standings.

Jamie Webber opened the goal with a low shot in the 35th minute to give SuperSport a 1-0 lead.

In the 67th minute of SuperSport’s 2-0 victory, Bradley Grobler scored his third goal in as many appearances.

Also on Tuesday, high-flying Chippa United defeated Sekhukhune United 1-0 at Chatsworth Stadium to earn their fourth consecutive Premiership victory.

Etiosa Ighodaro, who had been recalled to the Chippa team, scored the game’s sole goal. Chippa capitalized in the 27th minute with a header from Ighodaro after missing many opportunities earlier in the half.

For the first time in Chippa’s history in the Premiership, they were able to achieve four straight victories. They are now sixth on the log.
