The upcoming horror film “The Boogeyman,” based on Stephen King’s short story, has reportedly had some changes made to the final cut due to the intense reaction of test audiences.
The movie stars Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina and follows high school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister as they deal with the death of their mother.
Their therapist father, Will, is struggling to help them cope with their grief, and when one of his patients shows up at their house, they let him in, unknowingly bringing in a terrifying entity that feeds on suffering.
According to the director, Rob Savage, test audiences screamed so loudly during the first appearance of the creature that they missed the next lines of the movie.
As a result, the film had to be recut, with 45 seconds of padding added to ensure audiences didn’t miss any crucial information.
The film contains numerous jump-scares, which Savage says he loves when they “land” with the audience.
Even Stephen King, who notoriously hated the big screen adaptation of his novel “The Shining,” was scared by the film and sent Savage an email confessing he was still thinking about it a day later.
Fans of the horror genre watching the trailer have also been spooked, with many expressing excitement for the film.
The film is based on King’s short story of the same name, which was originally published in 1973 and later featured in his collection “Night Shift” in 1978.
