Stefon Diggs, a wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills, recently spoke about his conflicted feelings surrounding his teammate Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest on the field during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January.
Diggs talked about the incident on the season six premiere of Uninterrupted’s “The Shop,” explaining that he questioned if he was “messed up” for wanting to continue playing the game.
He recounted seeing his late father flatline in the hospital and how it made it difficult for him to know how to feel when he witnessed Hamlin’s medical emergency.
Despite the suspension and later cancellation of the game, Diggs tried to rally his team together, stating that he knew Hamlin would have wanted them to continue playing.
Diggs also spoke about how serious the game of football is and how Hamlin’s injury puts it into perspective.
He emphasized that football is not just a game and that he is not just playing when he is out on the field.
When Hamlin was resuscitated on the field, he was transported to the hospital and placed on a ventilator.
Diggs, along with other Bills players, chose to stay in Cincinnati while the team flew home.
Diggs tried to visit Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, but was stopped by security.
After Hamlin was discharged from the hospital, he attended the Bills’ Divisional Round matchup with the Bengals, but is still on the road to recovery and requires oxygen and regular heart monitoring.
