Staff dies of heart attack in Basildon’s secondary school

A secondary school in Basildon was forced to shut its doors on Monday after a staff member collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack on the playground.

Mr Steve Hutchinson, a long-serving member of the site staff, was attended to by emergency services who arrived quickly after being called.

Despite their best efforts, Mr Hutchinson passed away. The De La Salle School remained closed on Monday and Tuesday and is expected to reopen fully on Wednesday.

De La Salle’s headteacher Paul Norris expressed his condolences to Mr Hutchinson’s family and praised the school staff for their exemplary swift action.

Mr Hutchinson was a well-liked and respected member of staff and his loss will be deeply felt by the entire school community.

The headteacher also outlined arrangements that were to be put in place for vulnerable pupils to help with understanding the tragic event.

Remote learning has been provided for all pupils since the school has been closed following Mr Hutchinson’s death.

The headteacher emphasized that long-established emergency procedures worked out by the school, in partnership with the Local Authority and Diocese, were immediately enacted. After discussions with the Local Authority, Governing Body, and Diocese, the school will reopen as normal to all pupils on Wednesday 8th March.
