South Australian family saved from deportation to Scotland after spending $150,000 on immigration lawyers

A South Australian family has been granted permission to apply for permanent residency after a prolonged immigration saga. Mark Green, his wife Rebecca, and their two children, Jamie and Rebecca, moved from Scotland to Adelaide in 2012 after Mr. Green was recruited for his skills in specialist solar panel installation.

The family arrived on a work-related visa, but Mr. Green’s initial employer went out of business in 2014, and their fight to stay in Australia was further complicated when several of Mr. Green’s subsequent employers also went out of business before he could qualify for permanent residency.

In August 2022, the family almost faced deportation, with a flight back to the UK booked, before an 11th-hour reprieve from Immigration Minister Andrew Giles.

Following months of public support and media attention, the family has finally been allowed to apply for permanent residency. The Greens have lived in Australia since 2012 and have spent more than $150,000 on immigration lawyers during their fight to remain in the country.

Mr. Green expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported their journey, saying that being deported was the worst news he had ever received in his life.

However, he also expressed his relief that sanity prevailed, and the minister granted him the visa, adding that he couldn’t thank him enough.
