Six hikers ran out of water in Arizona, killing a doctor and ‘loving father’

While trekking in Arizona with five other people in temperatures approaching triple digits, a doctor lost his life after running out of water and becoming disoriented.

Authorities have verified that Dr. Evan Dishion, 32, passed away on Monday afternoon while trekking close to Cave Creek.

At 1:25 pm, Maricopa County sheriff’s officers got a complaint regarding hikers in distress at Spur Cross Trailhead Mountain, which is located about 40 miles north of Phoenix. Five individuals were evacuated as a result.

According to the Scottsdale Fire Department, the hikers continued on the route despite running out of water before becoming disoriented.

The physician leaves behind his wife, Amy Dishion, and their three-month-old daughter Chloe.

After trudging in the heat for four kilometres, all of their mobile phones had died, leaving them without a way to communicate.

Firefighters were called by the group using a borrowed phone, and when they got on the site, they flew the group to safety.

Scottsdale Fire Department Captain Dave Folio remarked, “When we went out on that path, the temperature on the asphalt alone was registering 127 off our vehicle.”

It was quite hot outside—I believe the temperature was 109. Three to four hours ago, they ought to have left the track.

Dishion was among those that were taken off the route, but he eventually passed away from heat exhaustion in the hospital.

Phoenix’s National Weather Service recorded a high of 109 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday, which is 6 degrees higher than average.

The five other hikers did not need hospitalisation, according to officials, and all were anticipated to recover.

Folio added, “Have a strategy; know your limits.” That is the message we want to spread, says the speaker.

Authorities urged trekkers to pack as much water as they could and advised them to turn around after their water supply had half. They also advised them to plan their itinerary and stay on their track.

Dishion was a “loving father and a devoted husband to his 3-month-old daughter Chloe and wife Amy Dishion,” according to his family and friends.

Dishion, a native of Salem, had just graduated from Creighton Medical School in the spring of 2021 and was in his second year of residency at the Barrow Neurological Institute. He had travelled to Phoenix to pursue a career as a neurologist.

The institution paid homage to the physician in a statement to GNT News, saying, “We are extremely grieved by the terrible demise of Dr. Evan Dishion.”

Dr. Dishion was a brilliant and talented doctor who had just started his first year as a resident in neurology at the Barrow Neurological Institute.

He was a kind and giving individual whose aim and passion were to enhance the lives of others. We offer Dr. Dishion’s family, friends, and coworkers our sincere condolences and prayers at this difficult time.

To cover funeral costs, the doctor’s family has put up a GoFundMe page.
