Shark attacked a scuba diver on a KwaZulu-Natal beach

Friday, December 30, 2022, emergency services responded to reports of a shark attack on Shelly Beach in KwaZulu-Natal.

A SHARK ATTACK RESULTS IN SEVERE INJURIES
At approximately 9:20, the Mi7 National Group’s emergency medical services received word of a suspected shark attack in the Shelly Beach region.

When the tower controller declared the attack, Mi7 medics stationed at the Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club responded.

It is thought that a 26-year-old guy was bitten by a Blacktip Reef Shark while on a chartered dive off the coast.

When the patient was returned to land, Mi7 medics observed severe bite marks on his arm.

He was promptly stabilized and transported to a hospital nearby.

According to shark spotters, shark bites are exceedingly rare throughout the world, but they do occur, and their frequency is increasing.

98 unprovoked shark attacks were recorded in 2015, surpassing the previous record of 88 attacks in 2000.

The surge in shark attacks is most likely attributable to an increase in the number of individuals swimming for longer periods of time.

It is plausible to anticipate an increase in shark-human interactions as the global population rises.

Since records began in 1905, there have been a total of 248 unprovoked attacks in South Africa.

The majority of these incidents (103) have occurred in the Eastern Cape, followed by KZN (90) and the Western Cape (55).

Tigers, bull (or Zambezi) and white sharks are responsible for the bulk of attacks in South Africa.

In 1900 and 1901, at Seaforth and Simonstown, the first fatalities were documented in the Cape Peninsula.

Since 1960, however, just 28 attacks have occurred on the Cape Peninsula.

This corresponds to around one attack every two years.

The majority of the peninsula’s 28 attacks have targeted spearfishers and surfers. Seven of the 28 most recent attacks were fatal.
