The City of Cape Town informed beachgoers on Monday that the primary swimming area at Fish Hoek beach has been closed until further notice.
The relevant segment is located between the lifeguard station and Jager Walk.
The brief closure was due to a sewer overflow caused by a blocked sewer line that has since been repaired, according to a statement posted on the website of the City of Cape Town. Plastics and other debris were extracted from the sewer line. The public is reminded not to dispose of rubbish unlawfully, but rather to use accessible solid waste services or to bring recyclables to the City’s drop-off sites.
“Different City departments have been activated to respond to this situation, including clearing the obstruction.” In addition, a jet truck has been despatched to help mitigate the effects of the overflow.
“Until further notice, the aforementioned part of Fish Hoek Beach has been closed as a precaution.
“Every day, City Health will collect water samples for water quality testing until the levels meet the minimal requirements for recreational activities as defined by the National Water Quality Guidelines.
“Until further notice, the public is urged to avoid contact with the water in this section.
“This is a precautionary measure, as contact with the water may cause gastro-intestinal problems, therefore anyone who enters the water does so at their own risk.
“Health Warning signage has been installed to alert the general public of the issue.
“We appreciate the cooperation of the people throughout this time.
“The City apologizes for any trouble this may give beachgoers.
