Tuesday, January 17th, a 20-year-old man from Delft drowned to death at Strand Beach in Cape Town. According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the deceased and his sibling had difficulty swimming.
Two witnesses reported to the NSRI Gordons Bay duty crew that two individuals were struggling in the waves at Stand Beach.
The water rescue network of the City of Cape Town was activated in response to the disaster.
Alan Meiklejohn, commander of the Gordons Bay station of the NSRI, stated, “CCTV camera monitors directed rescue services to the location where two people were in peril in the middle of a wave.”
A 17-year-old teenager was rescued by city lifeguards and returned to the beach, where he was immediately evaluated by paramedics.
The NSRI deployed the marine rescue vessel Zelda to search for the brother of the 17-year-old kid after discovering he was missing. The body of the 20-year-old was discovered on the seafloor during the search.
“A rescue swimmer from the NSRI was sent from the rescue boat to recover the victim and bring him aboard. Paramedics performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on him at the Strand lifesaving club.
“After all efforts to resuscitate the man had been exhausted, he was sadly declared dead,” Meiklejohn said.
The decedent, who resided in Delft, Cape Town, was entrusted to the Western Cape Government Health Pathology Services.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has initiated an investigation into an inquest.
