Screen Actors Guild Awards top winner

The Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on Sunday, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” continued its unlikely awards season success, taking home wins for best ensemble Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The SAG Awards are often seen as a preview for the Oscars, and this year’s ceremony threw some curveballs into the race.

The success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was the clearest result of the night, with the film winning top honours from the acting, directing, and producing guilds.

The night’s final moment belonged to James Hong, a supporting player in the film, who brought up the yellowface history of the 1937 film “The Good Earth” and the progress made since then for Asian American representation in Hollywood.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ win was surprising, coming over longtime favourite Angela Bassett. Michelle Yeoh won best female lead performance, becoming the first Asian actress to do so.

Ke Huy Quan also won best supporting male actor, becoming the first Asian to win best male supporting actor at the SAG Awards.

The SAG Awards are considered one of the most reliable Oscar bellwethers, and last year’s winner “CODA” also won best picture at the Oscars.

This year’s awards were streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube page, with a slightly scaled-down vibe and no broadcast time limit.

The show sped through early winners, including Jean Smart, Jeremy Allen White, and Jason Bateman.

The White Lotus also won best ensemble in a drama series, and Jennifer Coolidge won again for her role in the show.

The ceremony’s first award went to last year’s winner Jessica Chastain, who won best female actor in a TV movie or limited series for “George & Tammy.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” won for best stunt ensemble, announced ahead of the show on the red carpet.

The success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” increasingly looks like the biggest blockbuster at this year’s Academy Awards.
