A Finnish research team has discovered that the Fomes fomentarius fungus, used historically for its medicinal qualities and as a source of tinder, could be used for “medical and industrial applications in the future”.
In a study published in the journal Science Advances, the researchers found that the fungus has the strength of materials such as wood or plastic while remaining lightweight.
The fungus could be used in developing products such as body armour, surface coatings for windshields and exoskeletons for aircraft.
