School comes under fire from angry parents

Christopher Whitehead Language College in Worcester has come under fire from angry parents who are unhappy about the school replacing mirrors in the girls’ toilets with posters that brand makeup a ‘harmful drug’ which makes women feel ‘ugly’ without it.

The posters, which are intended to be motivational messages about inner beauty, compare using cosmetics to drug addiction and warn girls about feeling ‘ugly’ without makeup.

Parents have described the posters as patronising and degrading and have demanded that they be removed immediately.

Male students at the school have also complained after the mirrors, and an external door was removed from the boys’ loos.

One father with a child at the school described the posters as degrading and not the message they want to send to young and impressionable girls as young as 11.

Another parent said that the school should be promoting individuality instead of victim-blaming girls who choose to wear makeup.

Some commenters on Facebook have pointed out that many people, both women and men, wear makeup as a confidence boost and that the comparison between makeup and drug addiction is inappropriate and breeds sexism and misogyny.

However, some have approved of the posters and believe that they are a step towards reducing the corporate brainwashing of girls’ body shapes.

The school, which teaches children aged 11-19, was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2018. Last month, the headteacher spoke out about funding cuts and revealed that the school employs three counsellors to help pupils and staff cope with their mental health.
