SAPS Captain sentenced to four years direct imprisonment

A South African Police Service (SAPS) captain’s career was cut short after he was arrested and charged with bribery by the National Anti-Corruption Unit of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and members of the Independent Police Investigations Directorate during a joint undercover operation (IPID).

After being found guilty of soliciting a bribe from an undercover anti-corruption investigator, Captain Shange (58) of public order policing was sentenced to four years straight jail last week.

In April 2021, the RTMC’s anti-corruption team launched an investigation, which resulted in his arrest and conviction. A flood of accusations from members of the public claimed that law enforcement agents were extorting money from motorists south of Gauteng, prompting the inquiry.

Members of the anti-corruption section investigated the claims and discovered that corruption was going place in an operation carried out by SAPS officers.

An undercover operative was posted to a traffic infringement checkpoint performed by officers of the SAPS in Observatory, Johannesburg. Captain Shange pulled over the officer and sought a bribe from the undercover agent for a traffic infraction.

Money was exchanged, and Shange was apprehended by the combined squad on the spot. He was then taken to the Yeoville police station and jailed.

After our team members’ testimony were produced in magistrate court on May 27, 2022, the former Captain (Shange) was sentenced to four (4) years in jail.

It’s a pity that a high-ranking officer should perish in such appalling circumstances so close to retirement. We appreciate our team’s willingness to police ethical behavior on the roadways regardless of who is involved or what level they hold. “Before the law, all citizens are equal,” stated RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi.
