SA Police sergeant sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape and corruption

Friday, 10 February, the Richards Bay Regional Court sentenced 43-year-old police sergeant Philani Praiselord Mkhwanazi to 10 years of imprisonment after his conviction for rape and corruption.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, a woman was arrested for stealing in November 2020.

She was transported to the Esikhaleni Police Station and kept alongside other women in a jail.

However, at some time, Mkhwananzi transferred her to a different room and demanded sexual favours in return for her freedom.

The woman agreed to Mkhwananzi in order to be freed.

However, instead of releasing her as promised, Mkhwananzi returned her to her cell when they were finished.

Prior to reporting the event to another police officer, the victim confided in one of the cellmates.

Then, evidence was gathered and a case was initiated.

Regional Court Prosecutor Jomo Ngcobo presented the complainant’s evidence.

“In her statement, the complainant said that since the incident she has been ostracised by her family. She said that she lives in fear and has lost her dignity,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

Mkhwananzi was given a 10-year jail term and deemed unfit to carry a firearm.

The NPA welcomed the sentencing, stating that government officials should defend residents rather than exploit them.

“The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution. Public servants and government officials have a duty to protect citizens and not exploit them. The officer in this case took advantage of his position. We hope that cases like this will deter like-minded individuals. Well done to the prosecutor and colleagues from the SAPS who contributed to the success of the case,” she said
