Ryan Giggs’ appeal might take a year

After the jury in Ryan Giggs’ domestic abuse case was unable to reach a judgement yesterday, Ryan Giggs could have to wait over a year for a retrial.

During a drunken argument at his £1.7 million mansion, the 48-year-old former Manchester United footballer is said to have headbutted ex-girlfriend Kate Greville after utilising coercive and controlling behaviour against her.

But the seven women and four men on the jury at Manchester Crown Court were expelled after almost 23 hours of discussion because they were unable to reach a decision.

There were only 11 jurors since one of them was released last week due to illness.

The 17-day hearing is said to have cost the tax payer more than £10,000.

Giggs must now wait one week to see if a new trial will be held by the prosecution.

The earliest day it might be heard again at Manchester Crown Judicial, however, is in June owing to the extent of court delays.

When the date was announced to the court, the former player bowed his head and gave off a dejected vibe.

Lynne Giggs, who has been by her son throughout and watched from the audience gallery, cradled her head in her hands.

She said outside of court that her son’s life was “on hold.”

The jury was officially released by Judge Hilary Manley after thanking them for their “care and attention” to the case.

In order for the Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether a retrial should be placed, prosecutor Peter Wright QC requested from the court a seven-day extension.

She accepted and set a tentative date for June 5 of the next year, emphasising that this was not a trial date or an indication of whether it would really happen.

One of the most prominent players in the Premier League had his private and sexual life made public by the trial.

Intimate texts between Giggs and Miss Greville, 37, with whom he had a six-year relationship, were read to the jury.

The jury also learned about their heated arguments over the dishwasher as well as toe-curling poetry and descriptions of their “tough” sex.

Embarrassing details about how Giggs reportedly had affairs with up to 12 women while proclaiming his unwavering love for Miss Greville and his wish to have a baby with her were also told to the court.

Giggs acknowledged throughout his three days of evidence that he was a liar, a cheat, and that he could not resist an alluring lady.

He also acknowledged that he had never in his life been true to a love relationship.

As he described how spending the night in the cells after his detention was the “worst experience of my life,” he grieved and broke down in court.

Miss Greville was allegedly subjected to coercion and control by the former Wales manager.

On November 1, 2020, Giggs reportedly headbutted her at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, after she told him she was leaving him.

He was also charged with hitting Emma, her sister, 26, who was in the house taking care of the couple’s pet.

Giggs denied two counts of assault as well as one charge of using coercive behaviour.
