The multimillion-selling girl group – comprised of Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C, and Emma Bunton – met the then-Prince Charles several times during their heyday in the 1990s, and while they have not performed as a five-piece since the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012, royal organisers are said to be “super keen” to book the entire group for a performance at the upcoming coronation celebrations in May.
The Fabulous magazine of The Sun newspaper quoted a source as saying, “Royal organizers are extremely eager to secure Britain’s biggest girl band, and the Spice Girls are seriously contemplating a return to the stage as a five-piece for such a historic event.” Certainly, the Coronation is as unique as the Olympic Games – a one-time event and unique performance.”
The ‘Wannabe’ hitmakers met the then-Prince Charles at the height of their popularity, and Mel B and Geri notoriously violated royal decorum by kissing him on the cheek, stroking his bottom, and telling him he was “very sexy.”
Following her unexpected departure from the group in 1998, Geri, widely known as Ginger Spice, sang “Happy Birthday to You” at the 50th birthday party of the then-heir to the throne.
The source went on to say that there is a “sense” that the reunion may occur for such a “significant” event, which has not occurred in Britain since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, and that Melanie C and Mel B are “trying to make it happen.”
The claims came days after ‘I Want You Back’ singer Mel hinted that a new project was on the horizon for the band, which last reassembled for a stadium tour in 2019 without Victoria. Mel was unable to specify what the project was.
She stated, “I couldn’t be more specific, but I can tell you that something will be announced very soon. I will probably be reprimanded for my behavior. This is a project about which we are very enthusiastic. There will be five of us.”
