Red Wall Tories are furious with Rishi Sunak for breaking his vow to MPs in the North

The Tories in the Red Wall are reportedly angry with Rishi Sunak for breaking his promise to Northern MPs. One member even warned that the Northern Research Group (NRG), a group founded by Conservatives, could “make life difficult” for the Prime Minister since Sunak failed to deliver on his vow to create a dedicated Cabinet Minister for the North.

This situation has raised concerns that Labour could win more Red Wall seats in the upcoming election. The NRG sent a letter to Sunak, calling on him to honor his pledge to create a Cabinet-level Minister for the North.

In response, Sunak stated that he was a northern MP and pointed to Levelling Up Minister Dehenna Davison’s brief, even though she is not in the Cabinet. He also congratulated the NRG for their “fantastic work.” MPs in the NRG reportedly felt “betrayed” by Sunak’s response.

A government spokesperson stated that they are committed to spreading opportunity and investment to level up the country, and it is the responsibility of all ministers to ensure that this is achieved.
