Queensland sets to become first Australian state to implement pill-testing sites

Queensland is set to become the first Australian state to implement pill-testing sites as a means of reducing the harmful effects of illicit drugs, aligning with global standards for harm minimisation.

The move follows successful trials conducted by Pill Testing Australia (PTA) at Canberra’s Groovin’ the Moo festival in 2018 and 2019 and an ongoing trial at a fixed site.

Pill testing will enable users to have their drugs tested for potentially dangerous substances and chemical compounds.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath stated that the introduction of pill testing services is part of a suite of options that can positively affect outcomes regarding illicit drug use.

The Queensland government is developing protocols around testing operations and will go out to the market to identify a provider to trial pill testing at fixed and mobile locations.

While drug testing will not prevent police from taking action on illicit drug possession, supply, and trafficking, it supports the government’s new plan to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm and consider additional intervention strategies.

PTA clinical lead and emergency medicine physician David Caldicott said that Queensland’s decision to introduce pill testing reflects the community’s desire to shift from a tough-on-drugs approach to medically based solutions, bringing Australia in line with global standards.
